Leading skincare specialist Obagi has changed the game with its revolutionary ELASTIderm Facial Serum, which is proven to help restore resilience and firmness to the skin. Plastic surgeon Dr Vernon Ching explains the science behind it…
It’s no secret that genetic ageing and photo-damage are the cause of many dermal changes: changes which affect vital skin mechanisms such as collagen, elastin fibres and the ECM (Extra Cellular Matrix). Indeed, it’s these very components that are responsible for that healthy, plump and revitalised appearance associated with a youthful complexion. Elastin, in particular, is a protein in the dermis that is critical for healthy skin.
The Decline of Elastin
As one ages, Elastin fibres decreases in numbers, loses resiliency and degenerates with structural abnormalities, ultimately causing the skin to become less firm (i.e. a loose and sagging appearance). And unfortunately for South Africans, the natural depletion of Elastin is further accelerated by sun exposure.
It’s no wonder that devices like microneedling tools and procedures to tighten sagging skin are very popular!
Retinol products, backed by science, have been the most effective topicals to restore and reverse the signs of slackness in the skin. With regular use of retinols, the skin improves and becomes tighter.
That said however, products that simply add topical Elastin to the skin aren’t enough to overcome the natural loss of this protein that comes with ageing. In truth, it’s not even nearly sufficient to merely apply topical Elastin to replenish skin elastin…
So what is the answer?
The Scientific Solution
Obagi has developed Bi-Mineral Contour Complex™, an advanced ingredient technology that combines two minerals, zinc and copper, with malonate. It is specifically designed to start and support the three necessary stages of developing healthy Elastin naturally, which ultimately improves skin elasticity:
- Create – New Elastin is formed
- Convert – Newly formed Elastin is assembled
- Organise – Newly organised Elastin is combined to its optimal orientation
Patients reported that after 8 weeks of use:
- 100% of participants’ faces looked firmer*
- 97% said their skin felt more elastic and resilient*
- 97% saw a diminished appearance of wrinkled, loose facial skin*
- 97% reported, “my skin has bounce back” *
*After 8 weeks of use. Results based on a 12-week clinical study. Data on file at Obagi Cosmeceuticals LLC .
With sustained use, patients found that their positive results were long-lasting. Moreover, there was a definite improvement of skin elasticity in just 24 hours2 – as well as an improvement in firmness in as little as 2 weeks with continued improvements through 12 weeks1
ELASTIderm® at work
The ELASTIderm® range comprises of
- a facial serum
- an eye cream
- an eye serum
Since these products complement each other, they are best used together.
Clinical studies have shown that the eye cream has improved the elasticity in the skin around the eyes, while the addition of caffeine and the convenient rollerball dispensing system also helps to reduce under-eye puffiness (thereby promoting tighter looking skin around the eyes).
Take home message
Long term usage of products such as the new Obagi ELASTIderm Facial Serum enhances Elastin creation, while overall maintaining the facial skin firmness and elasticity.
