Dermatologist Dr Lev Naidoo introduces an innovative breakthrough in acne treatment with the AviClear laser. As the first FDA-approved laser designed to specifically target acne at its root cause, this technology offers a non-invasive alternative to conventional treatments. Dr Lev takes us through the benefits of AviClear, explaining how it provides long-term control for those struggling with persistent acne.

AviClear at The Dermatology Room
Hi Skincare Lovelies,
It is with the greatest pleasure that I’m able to share that the first FDA-approved acne-targeting laser has arrived at The Dermatology Room in South Africa. The AviClear laser uses a specific 1 726 nm wavelength of energy to target the root cause of acne – the overactive sebaceous or oil gland. This process significantly diminishes existing acne and helps prevent future breakouts.
Why did I bring AviClear to my practice?
Many of my patients are frustrated by repeat courses of prescription oral treatment for their acne. Antibiotics come with the possibility of antibiotic resistance, oral isotretinoin requires repeat blood monitoring, and hormonal options like the oral contraceptive pill and spironolactone cannot be used in males.
AviClear stands out as a clear option for those seeking an alternative, effective, safe, non-invasive treatment for longer-lasting acne control. As the first laser cleared by the US FDA for treating acne, it represents a groundbreaking advancement in dermatology.

How does the AviClear laser offer longer-lasting acne control?
Most acne management protocols provide control while patients remain on prescribed oral treatment, but many experience a recurrence of acne upon discontinuation. This can be disheartening, leaving patients frustrated by the lack of control they have over their skin.
In acne-prone individuals, an excess of sebaceous gland activity leads to the overproduction of sebum (oil), which disrupts the natural shedding of skin cells. This causes cells to clump together and clog the pores. AviClear targets this root cause by directly treating the sebaceous gland and physically decreasing its sebum output. This physiological rehabilitation of sebaceous gland activity allows for more long-standing acne control.
Clinical studies have shown that AviClear delivers outcomes comparable to oral vitamin A treatments but without systemic exposure and potential side effects. After the recommended three treatment sessions, patients can expect a significant reduction in both the frequency and severity of acne breakouts, with a 30% improvement at three months, a 60% improvement at six months, and up to 90% improvement at 12 months.

AviClear vs other energy-based devices for acne
While treatments like IPL, BBL, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectively manage acne symptoms such as redness and inflammation, they do not provide a long-term reduction in sebum production. AviClear sets itself apart as the first laser treatment that directly targets sebum production, offering a more comprehensive and lasting solution.
Who is a candidate for the AviClear laser?
A consultation is required to confirm acne before treatment. The laser may be used for those affected by mild to severe acne on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Clinical studies have demonstrated benefits in both adolescents and adults suffering from acne.
Is the laser safe for all skin types?
The targeted 1 726 nm wavelength is directed solely at the oil gland and not the melanocyte (pigment-producing cells), making the AviClear laser a safe and effective treatment for all skin tones. At our practice, we have safely treated patients of all skin tones with great success.

What does the laser feel like?
AviClear treatments are comfortable, thanks to the patented AviCool™ sapphire skin cooling technology. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, with many reporting that it was more tolerable than they expected.
How many AviClear treatment sessions will you need and how long does a session take?
Minimal preparation is required before each session. The procedure is quick, taking between 30 and 60 minutes from start to finish, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. Three sessions, spaced four weeks apart, are recommended.

Is there any downtime associated with the procedure?
AviClear is considered a safe treatment with an excellent safety profile, as evidenced by its extensive use in over 13 000 treatments across North America. The most common side effects include temporary redness and mild swelling, which generally resolve quickly. Patients can resume daily activities immediately.
In some cases, patients may experience a temporary increase in acne, known as “purging,” which stabilises as the treatment progresses.
When will you start seeing results?
Patience is key. Some patients begin noticing improvements a few weeks after their first session. Most report visible changes after their second treatment, with significant results becoming apparent a few weeks after completing all recommended sessions.
The AviClear philosophy
At The Dermatology Room, we are committed to adopting treatments that not only address the visible symptoms of acne but also enhance overall skin health without the need for ongoing medication. AviClear offers our patients a safe, effective, and non-invasive option for long-term acne management.
