Apply moisturiser. Feel relief. Feel the dryness creep back within hours. Reapply. Repeat.
For many people with persistently dry or reactive skin, moisturising can become a recurring cycle of temporary relief. Esse Skincare developed Barrier Rescue to approach extremely dry and reactive skin differently – supporting the skin barrier and its underlying biology rather than relying solely on temporary occlusion.

Relief Isn’t the Same as Repair
For decades, dry and reactive skin has been treated with petrochemical-based occlusives, such as petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin. These ingredients sit on the skin’s surface and form a temporary layer that slows water loss, bringing immediate comfort. But they don’t support the skin’s own barrier repair processes, which is why the comfort fades, and the cycle starts again. This results in managing the symptom, on repeat, rather than resolving what’s causing it.
It’s a cycle that shows up differently depending on your skin and your circumstances. Maybe it’s the tightness that sets in the moment the heating goes on for winter. Maybe it’s the low-sebum dryness that comes with age, or you’ve been using a daily moisturiser for years, and it’s simply stopped being enough. Or maybe your skin has settled after an eczema flare, but never quite feels resilient in between. There may be different starting points, but the underlying issue is always a barrier that needs more than a temporary seal.
Barrier Repair Beyond Occlusion
Esse believes barrier repair needs to go beyond occlusion to break the cycle of recurring dry skin. Introducing Barrier Rescue, with Propionic Acid and Ceramides to relieve extremely dry and reactive skin while supporting the skin’s barrier.
Esse Barrier Rescue works with the skin’s own biology to rebuild it from within. At its centre is a genuine first for the industry: the world’s first COSMOS-certified, bio-based Propionic Acid, developed with a leading greentech partner as a clean alternative to conventional petrochemical sources. Propionic Acid supports microbiome balance, calms inflammatory signals and strengthens barrier resilience.
It’s paired with skin-identical Ceramide NP, which restores the skin’s own lipid matrix for stronger, longer-lasting barrier integrity, and Castor Seed Oil, which calms visible redness and discomfort while supporting recovery. Together, these ingredients replenish the skin’s lipid matrix and help break the inflammation-dryness cycle at its source, rather than masking it.
“Barrier dysfunction is rarely driven by a single factor,” says Kyle Groenewald, Head of R&D at Esse Skincare. “Long-term barrier repair requires supporting the microbiome, reducing inflammation, and replenishing skin-identical lipids – not simply relying on temporary occlusion.”
The Clinical Proof
In a four-week independent clinical study of adults with dry, barrier-compromised skin, Esse Barrier Rescue was clinically proven to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL, the industry measure of how much moisture escapes through the skin) by 10.7% after 28 days.
What makes this meaningful is how it was measured. Most TEWL testing checks water loss while a product is still sitting on the skin, which really just tells you the surface layer is doing its job. The Bonn clinical trials measured skin at least eight hours after the last application. That means these results reflect how the skin is functioning on its own, between applications, not simply how well a barrier cream is blocking water loss.
The study, which was conducted by an independent laboratory in Bonn, Germany, reflects Esse’s commitment to producing scientifically supported skincare products that work for long-term skin health.
Results from user assessment trials
