People across the world are facing a common enemy that attacks despite race, creed, age or gender. The enemy’s name is ACNE. Everyone who suffers from, or lives with someone suffering from acne, knows the agony, the impact on self-esteem and the pain of ridicule, especially for teens. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to wave a magic wand and make it all disappear? Until that day comes, what can be done?
Acne today
A singular cause for acne has not yet been determined by science. A certain correlation between sebum overproduction and the appearance of acne is generally acknowledged, but opinions vary on other potential contributing factors. Sebum is a natural lubricant created to keep our skins from being flaky and porous; it keeps us waterproof. So, sebum is needed and we must remember that.

There is consensus that excess sebum contributes to clogged pores. Sebum is considered a food source for acne causing bacteria. These clogged pores can become mini feeding pods where acne bacteria feast and proliferate.
Recognised reasons for sebum overproduction include genetic predisposition, hormonal factors, diet and environmental influences. Treatments therefore remain largely symptomatic. Prescription drugs and topical creams are the main approach to treating acne.
New hope for further relief
In recent years, the role of technology has gained momentum. It is not intended to replace medication, but should be considered as further ammunition in the war on acne. If it is possible for some patients to reduce medication, they might suffer fewer side effects and in some cases, it may also bring financial relief.
Acne Vulgaris
The Venus Versa AcneDual applicator uses photo-therapy to simultaneously emit blue and red light; the blue light attacks acne causing bacteria and the red light aids in fighting inflammation. With our real-time cooling and unique SmartPulseTM technology, treatments are comfortable and no downtime follows.
Treatments are performed a few days apart over the course of a month to coincide with the growth cycles of the bacteria present. This treatment can bring relief to patients from teens to adults and across all skin types.

Acne Scarring
Patients suffering from acne seldom escape lasting effects as the active phase is replaced by scars that remain into adulthood. The Venus Viva Nano-fractional RFTM applicator with SmartScanTM technology is designed for scar revision.
Nano-fractional treatments are performed a month apart and is interspersed with multipolar RF and magnetic pulse treatments to help re-structure collagen and elastin fibres and stimulate growth of new collagen-producing cells.
Typically, results are achieved in 3 – 4 sessions, depending on the severity of the scars. Nano-fractional radio frequency is also safe for all skin types. Patients are usually able to apply makeup after 24 hours.

The most important post-treatment care in both cases is to keep the skin clear of any product and only use warm water to rinse for the first 24 hours, while avoiding direct sun. Thereafter, apply an appropriate sunscreen.
Simple habits to help control outbreaks
- Skin cleansing and moisturising – don’t strip the skin of sebum by over-scrubbing and don’t be afraid to moisturise. Ask your skin care specialist for an appropriate cleanser and apply a moisturiser as directed. If the skin is too dry, it will get the message that it needs more sebum and the vicious cycle will start again.
- Sun protection – always protect your skin against direct sun and over-exposure. It is just a clever way to protect your skin from additional trauma.
