Micro-needling has been rated one of the most popular aesthetic skin treatments. So it’s no wonder that any innovation within this field makes quite noticeable waves. Written by Dr Melanie Lambrechts…
The science and evidence behind microneedling are proven and sound. We understand that the benefits from this treatment arise on two levels:
- Skin loves to be pricked! The thousands of micro-trauma pinholes initiate a cascade of growth factors to be released into its multiple layers. Most importantly, the melanin and collagen-producing cells are “woken up”, refreshed and mediated by the action of the needles.
- These micro-channels are then open wide for approximately 15 minutes after the device passes over the skin. This is the magic window period where selected ingredients are applied to diffuse deep into the dermis, ultimately improving the penetration of substances.
Now, while micro-needling is undoubtedly one of the most effective treatments in skin rejuvenation due to its penetration of substances, one must still be vigilant when undergoing the procedure. This is because if the RIGHT ingredients are not used, then unfavourable reactions or sensitivity may arise from chemicals that are too harsh, or actually toxic to skin cells.
Applying the right product
The skin is what we call a lipid bi-layer. It is a delicate mixture of fats and water that form a barrier to the environment which protects us from many harmful entities, such as UV radiation, chemicals, and bacteria. When we micro-needle, we repeatedly break open this barrier, and care needs to be taken to what we can “infuse” through these artificial holes.
The science behind correct product use is vast. When choosing micro-needling for your skin, seek a trained professional who will use appropriate and approved products that have been certified for use with micro-needling.
A leap forward in technology
A recent “wave” in the micro-needling community was created by an innovative product called TEOXANE Topical Skin Boosters.
You may know skin boosters from their use in mesotherapy where they are injected into the skin to trap hydration and stimulate collagen production. Why TEOXANE has created a stir, is by making their skin booster topical.
topical /ˈtɒpɪk(ə)l/ adjective MEDICINE relating or applied directly to a part of the body. Eg “topical steroid creams”
The science explained
What does this mean? This powerful skin booster can be applied over the skin after micro-needling and does not have to be injected. This innovation is astounding and has important implications for the needling treatment. The treatment is safer, faster and skin heals quicker.
TEOXANE Topical Skin Booster (TSB) contains a proprietary mix of both high concentration cross-linked and free hyaluronic acid (HA). The free HA is able to diffuse into the skin via the created channels and trap water in the skin, increasing radiance and hydration. Its presence also facilitates healthy collagen and elastin production.
The cross-linked HA forms a mesh barrier over the broken skin, creating a protective layer that prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The mesh creates a cocoon of safety, in which the skin can begin to heal, and causes the magic of rejuvenation to start. This cross-linked HA is known as RHA – resilient HA. It is similar to the HA used in injectable dermal fillers.
The product also contains methylglucoside phosphate, which is a source of safe bio-energy for the skin, and aids in the renewal which needs to take place.
Lastly, there is a Boosted Dermo-Restructuring Complex (DRC) which contains 14 nutrients that are essential for the skin – eight amino acids, three antioxidants, two minerals (copper and zinc), and Vitamin B6. The concentrations of these in TEOXANE TSB are over 100 times more than in other cosmeceuticals currently available. This product packs a punch!
