Types of hair loss

Hair loss is when the source of hair growth – the follicle – isn’t capable of doing its job for whatever reason. Androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness) is caused by a progressive contraction of hair follicles that are sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

When testosterone reaches the growth centre at the base of the hair – it’s converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) [by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase] a “poisonous” hormone which kills the cells lining the hair follicle; the cells literally die when exposed to it.

Treatments

Conventional treatment for hair loss is to use shampoos but the active ingredients work on the hair shaft and not where the growth is (or isn’t) happening. The answer lies in scalp solutions, which enter the follicle and stimulate the cells responsible for growth.

The first step, however is to consult your doctor to exclude any underlying medical conditions. If healthy, the best way forward is generally a multi-modality all-inclusive approach that:

Blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT

Increases new blood vessel growth at the base of the follicle

Figures out the signals to activate the lining cells

Tells the skin to form brand new follicles from scratch
