March 2020 sees the return of the La Roche-Posay Atopy School, in partnership with Dr. Nomphelo Gantsho and Prof. Rannakoe J Lehloenya (Prof. Ranks) of the Dermatology Treatment and Phototherapy Clinic (DTPC) based in Century City, Cape Town.
WHAT IS THE LA ROCHE-POSAY ATOPY SCHOOL?
French Active Cosmetics brand, La Roche-Posay, has identified a lack of knowledge around atopic dermatitis (commonly known as eczema) amongst parents and care-givers of child patients, who are desperate to provide relief and return quality of life to those sufferers in their care.
The Atopy School is a unique educational platform, delivered in structured class-style session, where parents and children have access to a partner dermatologist who is dedicated to child patients suffering from eczema and other atopic skin conditions.
With over 80 Atopy Schools around the world, La Roche-Posay is now investing in improving the quality of life of children with eczema right here in South Africa.
BENEFITS FOR ATOPIC PATIENTS
La Roche-Posay research has shown that eczema is associated with a dramatic drop in bacterial diversity in the skin’s microbiome, with up to 30% of the ecosystem being occupied by only one bacteria: staphylococcus aureus (staph). This microbiome imbalance contributes to three interconnected mechanisms:
- Staph bacteria colonisation – eczema flare-ups always come back.
- Skin barrier alteration – skin is very dry.
- Skin inflammation – skin is itchy and there’s an urge to scratch.
The aim of the Atopy School is to improve both compliance with prescribed treatment products and the quality of life of patients and their families. Each class is run by Dr. Gantsho and Prof. Ranks, and their medical team, and aims to serve both young patient and parent in order to specifically address his or her atopy issues, and better understand the disease and its evolution, while learning about optimum treatment protocol.
“The Atopy School is first and foremost a forum for listening and exchanging, both for parents and children. These highly interactive workshops or therapy classes are presented by the clinic’s dermatologists and supported by their medical team. During these sessions, patients can speak freely about their condition, concerns and daily challenges. These educational workshops are an excellent platform to share knowledge and experiences, and to learn how best to maintain a healthy skin. The difficulties inherent in the treatment, the lack of knowledge and isolation often cause despair amongst children and their parents. They need to talk about their disease, their daily life and fears. This takes time, listening skills, counselling and professionals to talk to – and we can help to improve your child’s life every day.” – Dr. Nomphelo Gantsho
LIPIKAR BAUME AP+
La Roche-Posay, the only brand recommended by 90 000 dermatologists worldwide, has been pioneering skin microbiome research in partnership with dermatologists since 2011. Based on clinical studies, the brand is proud to produce the LIPIKAR BAUME AP+ and SYNDET AP+ Cleansing Gel, which have both shown significant tolerance results on children and babies. Both products have been tested on newborns under paediatric control, proving their optimal safety in supporting a balanced and diverse microbiome, even in the most severe cases. Patients will be introduced to both products at the Atopy School, and how best to incorporate them into a daily skincare treatment routine.
THE DERMATOLOGY TREATMENT AND PHOTOTHERAPY CLINIC (DTPC)
The Dermatology Treatment and Phototherapy Clinic (DTPC) is one of the few dedicated private Phototherapy clinics in Cape Town, which provides a specialist phototherapy treatment. It is the only practice providing a topical treatment for private patients suffering from chronic skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and skin lymphoma, to count among others.
All treatments are carried out by a highly trained dermatology nursing team, who are supported by the clinic’s associated dermatologists, Dr. Nomphelo Gantsho and Prof. Rannakoe J Lehloenya.
