Prepping the skin for summer
Swimsuit shopping is done and the holiday home is booked, but is your skin prepped for summer?
Violet Schoeman Skin Specialist and Laser Operator from the beautiful Laserderm Parkhurst branch recommends a couple of tips and explains how to properly look after your skin during the upcoming summer months.
First up, “know your weakness”. Clients who enjoy the rays of the sun and already have underlying skin conditions like pigmentation concerns we recommend that you consult the timeline in which you do laser and light-based treatments (like Fraxionated laser resurfacing, Intense pulsed light devices and CO2 lasers) and do them rather during winter or in the cooler months of summer.
Also, be careful doing laser hair removal and going into the sun immediately after. The reason for this is that the laser or light could cause severe light or sun sensitivity and clients may experience prolonged inflammation. When the skin is light and sun-sensitive it could attract the sun for a minimum of 14 days after and it is highly recommended that during the healing and light sensitivity you rather steer clear of direct sun exposure or tanning.
Should you be well consulted about the considerations and you have discussed your travel plans with your doctor or therapist we could recommend some treatments that you can consider for the months leading up to summer holidays (Oct, Nov, Dec).
Non-light based devices (like microneedling or Radio Frequency, Dermafrac, Skinpen, Foma-RF and Morpheus8- RF-Needling), these are all different treatment methods which stimulate and produce new collagen and skin tissue for clearer, brighter, smoother, firmer, more toned skin.
Dermafrac needling and skin infusion for example, uses a roller with 180 super fine needles working at 0.25 and 0.5mm depths, these needles gently puncture the top layers of skin and simultaneously infuses high concentrations of naturally derived growth factors, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and brightening agents onto the skin to boost and equip the skin to handle the environmental aggressors we might be exposing it to during the summer sunny days.
Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen! We wish we could be with clients every day to help take care of their skin, and if there is one non-negotiable product it is sunscreen. Also, check out great tyrosine inhibitor ingredients that help to inhibit all 5 pathways of melanin production to treat and to protect as well as maintain skin health. (Great clinical study on how this works with the Brightening Complex and serum from iS Clinical)
iS CLINICAL has two SPF’s – both provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and both are more than just sunscreen lotions.
Melissa Smit, a Laser Specialist at Laserderm Illovo recommends the iS Clinical ECLIPSE SPF 50+ in Beige Tint. It’s is an ultra-sheer, matte finish lotion and is recommended for oily skin. This antioxidant-rich SPF is water-resistant and often used by the active person on all shades or tones of skin.

iS Clinical’s EXTREME PROTECT SPF 30 is 4-in-1: it is anti-ageing, reparative, an SPF and a moisturiser in one product. This product also holds Extremozyme technology to protect the skin from environmental aggressors.

Sun savvy summer
At Laserderm we always try to educate clients on a “Sun Savvy Summer”. This doesn’t necessarily mean a “sunless summer”, but rather protecting the skin and to try our best to prevent skin cancer and ageing of the skin. Apply sunscreen liberally all over your body and focus on the areas that have much thinner skin like your neck, face (incl eyelids and lips) and hands.
If you have had a day out on the beach or in the bush and if you have sufficiently applied sunscreen adequately, also consider putting back some crucial and beneficial supplementation like a good Hydrating serum or Moisturiser (iS Clinical Reparative Moisture Emulsion) and even a good Neck cream for the very thin and delicate Neck and décolleté area hydrated and nourished. (iS CLINICAL’s NECK PERFECT COMPLEX).
Also, familiarise yourself with one of our at-home skincare kits that will have everything you need to help deal with the environmental damage that occurs (iS CLINICAL PURE CARE COLLECTION – Cleanse, Treat, Hydrate & Protect) – it just may be the summer-loving you need this season.

Take home message from Mazanne van Staden, Skincare Specialist and General Manager at Laserderm:
“In the end, any evident condition and or concern can be treated at any time during the year regardless of the season like unsightly veins or an ugly scar, but I strongly recommend that you take the time to be informed about all the possible outcomes no matter the severity of the procedure and try as far as possible to stick to the recommendations and guidelines provided by a therapist or skincare specialist. Visit Laserderm for a consultation and let us help you make an informed decision with the correct treatment plan for you, your skin and your holiday plans.”
