As women approach menopause, understanding this natural phase of life can be both empowering and comforting. Dr Sibu Lubelwana shares her own experiences with menopause and highlights the significance of community and open dialogue in breaking down societal stigmas around it. This article will provide insights into the recent Menopause Summit, where experts came together to address key issues, challenges, and support strategies for women going through menopause.
Launching the Menopause Summit: A safe space for knowledge and support
In an effort to educate, empower, and destigmatise menopause, I am proud to announce the success of the inaugural Menopause Summit, held on 13 October 2024. Inspired by my personal journey and a collective need to challenge negative stereotypes, this event aimed to create a supportive space for open discussion.
My own experiences navigating menopause and the anxieties around societal judgement highlighted the urgent need for such a platform. Sharing my story on social media resonated with others, underscoring how important it is to foster a community where menopause is discussed without shame or isolation.
The summit was MC’d by Mrs SA Finalist Mrs Delia Kroll, who handled the entire program like a true professional.
Timing for maximum impact
With October recognised as Menopause Awareness Month and 18 October dedicated specifically to raising awareness on menopause-related issues, launching the summit a weekend before this date was intentional. The timing allowed for increased impact and visibility, aligning with a broader campaign for awareness and change.
A gathering of experts and real stories
The summit welcomed over 60 attendees, including women experiencing menopause, healthcare professionals, and wellness experts who shared essential insights and resources. The line-up featured an exceptional panel of speakers, each bringing unique expertise and perspectives to the discussions.
Medical perspectives on menopause
I led the first panel, joined by Dr Nombuso Mthethwa, an OBGYN; Prof Motshedisi Sebitloane, Academic Head in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Nelson Mandela School of Medicine; and Lulu Becker, a pelvic physio
Together, we provided valuable insights into menopause from a medical standpoint, offering attendees a more profound understanding of physiological changes and medical support options.
Balancing roles: The woman at work and home
The next panel, facilitated by Joanne Philip, an Attorney in Private practice, focused on the challenges of balancing work and home life during menopause. Panellists included Thulisile Galelekile, Executive Manager of Trade and Industry KZN, and Colleen Wilson, a well-being and transitional coach.
This session focused on how you can work on yourself through this transition period to improve the quality of relationships that matter.
Personal stories of strength and resilience
A powerful highlight of the summit was a session featuring personal stories shared by Xoli Madlala, author of The Perimenopausal Globetrotter, and Thuli Mhlungu, an Advocate and Woman’s Health activist. Led by Thobile Tops Mkhwanazi, founder and CEO of Sisterhood Connect, this panel struck a deep chord with attendees, who saw reflections of their own experiences in these honest and inspiring journeys.
Embracing self-care and well-being
The final session, facilitated by Lenore Goss Matjie, a fashion and dance icon from the The Mommy Club, emphasised the importance of self-care during menopause. Dermatologists Dr Cebi Sibisi and Dr Mamello Ntsele, along with style and image consultant Merise Bassa, shared practical advice on skincare and self-image, reminding attendees to prioritise personal well-being during this transitional period.
Moving forward with empowerment and awareness
The Menopause Summit was more than just an event; it was a milestone in the movement towards menopause education and destigmatisation. By bringing together expert insights, personal stories, and practical support, the summit empowered women to approach menopause with confidence, resilience, and community.
