Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common concern, particularly in skin of colour, where inflammation can lead to stubborn pigmentation issues. Many patients, desperate for a solution, turn to products that often exacerbate the problem. Dr Sujata Garach explores how MediLUX, an advanced LED light therapy device, can effectively reduce inflammation, improve skin tone, and support post-treatment healing – making it a valuable tool for both patients and practitioners.

Managing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and inflammation
Inflamed skin can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in skin of colour, where it is notoriously difficult to treat and may become permanent. The key to managing PIH lies in preventing inflammation in the first place, especially when undergoing aesthetic treatments.
Many patients struggle with the emotional impact of PIH, often resorting to any product they believe will help. Unfortunately, these unverified treatments frequently contain irritating ingredients that worsen pigmentation.
Clinical trials on skin of colour
Clinical trials were conducted on patients with skin of colour at our practice, focusing on young women in their 20s and 30s. The MediLUX device was used post-treatment to address skin inflammation, acne, pigmentation, and overall skin texture, while also stimulating collagen production. Over five weeks, results were documented using VISIA skin analysis, and the findings have been promising.

Patients selected for the study presented with active acne, inflammation from heavy makeup and incorrect skincare use, and PIH caused by acne. Results showed:
- Reduction in inflammation, giving the skin a smoother appearance
- Faster healing, controlling swelling and erythema
- Suppressed sebaceous activity, reducing acne breakouts
- Improved hydration, skin tone, and sensitivity
- Strengthened skin integrity and structural support
- Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
The MediLUX also demonstrated excellent results in post-Secret RF treatments, where all patients experienced a substantial decrease in redness and swelling, leading to significantly quicker healing times.
