I’m personally a big supporter of a collagen supplement and have been taking collagen for years. Now, this could all be in my head, but ever since I started, I’ve seen (and felt) an improvement in:
- Skin quality (nothing majorly anti-ageing, yet subtle improvement in my overall skin quality and elasticity)
- Improved muscle recovery after gym
- Improved mobility in my joints
- Reduced aches, pains, muscle spasms (long story short: after being in a car accident many years ago, my lower back would frequently go into spasm. In addition to daily stretches and yoga, I think collagen has really helped me to reduce these)
- Improved general well-being and strength
- I’m not sure if it has a 100% effect on my hair and nails (the case studies and science on this are still argued out there), but it certainly couldn’t hurt
- PLUS, I’m currently six months pregnant and have continued taking collagen throughout. In my experience, it has been instrumental in supporting my joints and connective tissue as my body changes and general aches and pains. I’m keen to see how/if it will also help in postpartum recovery and healing. (Side note – my doctor signed off on me using this)
Of course, this goes without saying that no *single* supplement in isolation will give you immense results (please be consumer-aware of marketing slogans), it really is a joint effort of using the right skincare for you, balancing your hormones (see your doctor about that!), a healthy diet, healthy movement, good sleep, skincare treatments, aesthetic treatments – basically, just looking after yourself that will ultimately give you the best results.
In working at Aesthetic Appointment, I’ve had the pleasure of trying out many brands and types of collagens over the years – and while I think many of them are very good when it comes to choosing a collagen supplement for YOU, it really comes down to your budget, suitable ingredients and how those ingredients are used together because not all collagen supplements are created the same – be it in powder, liquid or tablet form.
What brand did I review?
Colla-Genie – a premium collagen peptide supplement, that is:
- Type I, II, III & IV collagen
- Kosher & Halal certified
- Sugar & Gluten free
- Gmo free
- Keto & Paleo friendly
Colla-Genie provides your body with ONE PURE ingredient – no additives or fillers.
What’s in it?
Collagen can be sourced from the following animals:
- Bovine (Beef)
- Poultry (Chicken)
- Porcine (Pig)
- Marine (Fish)
Colla-Genie is sourced from marine collagen.
Colla-Genie’s one and only ingredient is premium hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides from wild fish skins. Additionally, Colla-Genie utilises Fish collagen peptides which have a very low molecular weight, making it more bioavailable.
How long did I test it for?
30 days – I used one scoop every day and that’s how long it lasted approximately. The jar says you can have up to two scoops a day as a boost but didn’t find this necessary for me.
How do you use it/where to use in your routine?
It has absolutely no flavour, so I popped a scoop (provided) into my morning coffee. But it can also be had with your cereal/porridge, smoothie, sprinkled over muesli etc. Some people have said it has a slight “marine” smell or taste to it, but this wasn’t the case for me.
Who is it for?
Men and women 18yrs+.
What does it cost?
This is a premium collagen with a premium price of R675.00 for a jar. They do also offer a discounted bundle on their website.
Where can you get it?
It is available in some aesthetic clinics, but you can buy it online from their website www.collagenie.co.za – plus they offer free shipping nationwide in South Africa.
Would I recommend it?
Yes!
