The year 2024 marked a pivotal chapter for the South African Society for Dermatologic Surgery (SASDS), with its unwavering commitment to nurturing education and research in dermatology. Our community witnessed remarkable growth as dermatologists from both the private and public sectors actively participated in educational initiatives and professional development programs. This surge in engagement has strengthened the dermatology community, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared learning.
The success of our workshops, journal meetings, and the 8th Combined Dermatology Congress showcased the vibrant contributions of South African dermatologists. These initiatives laid a strong foundation for continued excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Additionally, 2024 saw the nationwide expansion of the Dispensing License course, further enhancing accessibility and skill development.

Looking Ahead to 2025:
Fostering Innovation and Collaboration in Dermatology
As we step into 2025, SASDS is dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration in dermatology. Our focus this year is to push the boundaries of dermatological practice by:
- Encouraging fresh ideas.
- Promoting cross-sector collaboration.
- Developing initiatives that enhance clinical practice, procedural dermatology, and dermatological research in South Africa.
Key Initiatives for 2025
1. Innovation Grants for Dermatologists
SASDS will provide up to R75,000 in funding to support innovative research, pilot projects, and initiatives aimed at advancing dermatological practices. We particularly encourage projects that bridge clinical research with real-world applications.
2. Collaborative Research and Development Programs
To foster collaboration, SASDS will launch a mentorship program, pairing experienced dermatologists with emerging leaders. This initiative will provide guidance and support in both research and clinical development.
3. Expanded Workshops and Online Journal Meetings
Building on the success of 2024, we will offer more workshops covering topics such as facial anatomy, dermocosmetics, and chemical peels. Online journal meetings will resume on 29 January 2025, from 19:00 to 20:30, with CPD accreditation for all SASDS members.
