I love the Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox rendition of the song “Sistas are doin’ it for themselves”- a real 80s female empowerment anthem which peaked on the charts and has been covered by so many artists- too many to mention. It’s definitely the song that played in my head when I started reading about Beaut– the local, South African skincare brand conceived and brought to fruition by a team of fabulous women. It launched last year and is making waves in the ocean of sustainable skincare brands.
Being kind to our planet appeals to the majority of us, so the fact that Beaut is vegan friendly, cruelty-free and non-toxic is definitely an attractive feature. The packaging reflects this in its Miron violetglass bottles- the glass protects and preserves the natural products within from UV rays and in turn this increases shelf-life.
But let’s get to the products themselves. This is a no-nonsense brand; there’s no hiding behind delicate floral fragrance or complex, 10 step routines. There are 4 simple, straight-talking serums, jam-packed with tried and tested natural ingredients that work. Non-irritating, powerful and effective, you can use them together, in various combinations, consistently- and get positive results.
The rule of thumb when it comes to layering is to go from the thinnest formula to the denser one. You can decide whether to use 2 serums in the morning and maybe another two in the evening, depending on your area of focus.
Power Potion
This is a hard worker- with beautiful acids like Mandelic, Willow bark extract, Lactic and Pineapple acids, it lightly exfoliates, brightens and evens out your skin. A must for dull, tired, post-holiday skin!
Sunny skin
I am a Vitamin C lover, as I know its benefits regarding skincare. This serum is a joy- a secret dark spot warrior with enough Vitamin C, Liquorice and Niacinamide (Vit B3) to coax your skin into natural glowing.
Face Juice
The name says it all- even oily skins suffer from dehydration, the harbinger of dull and ageing skin. This serum counteracts dryness; its soothing properties repair and reduce water loss. Ingredients are: Hyaluronic acid, Panthenol (Vit B 5) Green tea, Gotukola and Aloe.
Wrinkle Shminkle
For overall skin health, this thicker serum concentrates on improving texture and firmness. With ingredients like Bakuchiol, Niacinamide, Azelaic acid and nature’s own Vitamin A- Rosehip Seed oil, consistent use will reveal healthy, radiant skin.
To conclude
I really loved my voyage of discovery into the Beaut natural serums and I’m inspired by the ethos of this brand. I would recommend getting a set of Beauts to try (this contains the full set of 4 serums, in smaller amounts)- collectively, they really work well together- just like that favourite song of mine-
Sistas are doing it for themselves
Standing on their own two feet
And ringing on their own bells
Sums it up for me.
P.S. If, like me, you prefer a medical stamp of approval, you’ll find that Dr Ian Webster has given his- you’ll find Beaut on the Dermastore website.
