More people are turning to non-invasive aesthetic procedures such as microneedling, laser resurfacing and deep peels, seeking improvements in skin appearance and texture. This has prompted the need for pre- and post-treatment care. Our team at Esse has drawn on more than a decade of research into the skin microbiome to create dedicated skincare products for clients to use before and after these aesthetic procedures.
Our biotech skincare brand, led by founder Trevor Steyn, has just launched the innovative Esse Pre-Care Oil, Post-Care Oil, and Esse Activator, which introduce a world-first in the medical aesthetics space – live probiotics. The use of living microbes is gaining attention in medical science, even being employed in recent treatment protocols for third-degree burn victims. We’ve honed delivery of our probiotics, with live bacteria being kept dormant in soluble microcapsules until application.
Our new Esse Aesthetics Range contains Lactobacillus bacteria to optimise the results of these treatments by resolving inflammation, speeding recovery, and reducing adverse outcomes. This minimises risk for both the practitioner and the client while guiding the skin safely through healing with reduced downtime and better skin appearance after recovery.
How to use the Esse products
Step 1: Pre-treatment care
In preparing for the anti-ageing treatment, clients will apply the Pre-Care Oil, combined with the Esse Activator, for two weeks before. The Esse Activator releases the probiotics onto the skin by dissolving the microcapsules. This helps to prepare the skin for the treatment and builds skin compatibility for our post-treatment probiotics and other actives.
How it works
In the preparation phase, the Pre-Care Oil delivers low levels of probiotics to habituate skin to our proprietary Lactobacillus strains. The Activator releases the probiotics onto the skin by dissolving the microcapsules, providing a tailored nutrient mix to feed these beneficial microbes.
Step 2: Post-treatment care
For two weeks after the treatment, the client can then apply our Esse Post-Care Oil and Esse Activator. The skin is in a vulnerable state after treatment with the microbiome disrupted, and the barrier function impaired. To address this, we’ve created a cutting-edge treatment using live probiotics that protect the skin from potential pathogens, while accelerating healing for a smooth recovery. These will also lock in the benefits of the treatment, enhancing the resulting skin appearance for the client.
How it works
After the procedure, the quantity of probiotics is increased to provide additional protection while the skin heals. The Activator ensures the pH is buffered to the correct level and that microbes are effectively released onto the skin with selective nutrients to feed them. We’ve also added Sapienic Acid – the most abundant fatty acid in human sebum. This substance is unique to humans (sapienic, named after Homo sapiens). Sapienic Acid is toxic to skin pathogens, but our commensal microbes have evolved immunity making this a powerful ingredient to protect the skin and support the reinstatement of a healthy microbiome.
Why Esse has developed this range?
For more than 10 years, Trevor Steyn and our team at Esse have been using organic biotechnology to rewild the skin’s microbiome, keeping skin healthier and younger. While sustainability and microbiome support remain at the heart of our philosophy, we felt compelled to provide those undergoing these procedures with the support that our unique position allows. Our history of advancements in probiotic technology has provided the specialised tools needed for this. The Pre- and Post-Care Oils, along with the Activator, are a result of over a decade of dedicated investigation into the many ways that our microbiomes can improve the health of our skin.
