Acne breakouts are a multifaceted skin condition that impacts many of us regardless of age. It can occur temporarily during specific phases of our lives or be a constant condition that needs to be treated. Dr Des Fernandes, Environ’s Founder and Scientific Director, says that no one should have uncontrolled breakouts leading to permanent scars and pits, as there are various treatment options available.
The human skin is made up of tiny pores that are connected to oil glands beneath the surface of the skin. The oil glands (or sebaceous glands) produce an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is responsible for cleaning our pores by carrying dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria to the surface of the skin. Occasionally, sebum, dead skin cells and dirt clump together to form a plug that clogs the pore. This results in the formation of bacteria which then causes swelling and inflammation.
There are also other intrinsic factors like hormonal changes and stress, as well as extrinsic factors like diet, and physical and environmental factors that can cause further breakouts and congestion.

Dr Fernandes says that specially formulated oil-based skincare products should be used on oily, breakout-prone skin. “The stratum corneum layer of the skin is designed to repel water (hydrophobic) but oils on the other hand are shown to be more effective in delivering essential nutrients to where the skin needs them most, in a shorter time frame.”
He says that there are a few ‘breakout clearing’ ingredients that people struggling with acne should look out for because each plays a very specific role in obtaining clear, healthy-looking skin:
1. Vitamin A
Environ’s beautiful science has proven that breakout-prone skin is vitamin A deficient.
Vitamin A is a powerful normaliser of skin cell activity and sebum production. It’s the only molecule that can help improve the appearance of breakouts, congestion, and peripheral inflammation by helping to control the effects of excess sebum.
2. Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 is known to have anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating properties. It may also assist in minimising the discolouration left behind by scarring.
3. Vitamin C
As a water-soluble antioxidant, vitamin C helps to protect the skin against the damaging effects of free radicals. It has also been proven to enhance skin resilience and minimise the discolouration left by scars.
4. Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids
Lactic Acid, an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Salicylic Acid, a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) both help to promote the natural exfoliation of dead and dying skin cells, thereby preventing pores from becoming congested.
Dr Fernandes says that AHAs and BHAs can be very effective when people have breakouts. “AHAs are particularly useful in treating breakouts because they increase the acidity in the skin. BHAs have the unique property of penetrating through pores, eliminating breakout-causing bacteria, and helping to restore the irritated skin surrounding the pore.”
5. Tea Tree
Studies have shown that Tea Tree has antibacterial properties making it a powerful ingredient to target breakouts and help to minimise skin irritations.

“By keeping the vitamin A levels high in the skin, we help to reduce the chances of breakouts presenting,” says Dr Fernandes.
