Urgent Call to Doctors to Ensure Ethical and Professional Marketing of services performed by Healthcare Professionals.
Our society has been rather busy with a campaign to enhance the reputation and the regulation of aesthetic medicine within Southern Africa.
The campaign has been addressing persons and salons performing aesthetic medical procedures without the necessary qualifications and registrations.
Part of this campaign is to also address our members and colleagues when they do not follow the regulations of ethical and professional advertising.
As the Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine Society of South Africa (AAMSSA) it is our duty to enhance education, regulation and the safe practice of especially aesthetic medicine (to the ultimate benefit of the patient).
We therefore urge you to ensure that your practice or clinic is fully aware of the advertising regulations for your professional services.
A few important aspects is therefore highlighted:
1. Advertising of trade names: A doctor may not advertise a scheduled medicine trade name (such as Botox®) to the public and you may not discount your services or scheduled products (touting/canvass for business). We kindly request you to change the advertisement on your websites, social media or newsletters to ensure that you comply with the regulations as stipulated. This includes the reference to trade names such as Botox® in advertisements. See addendum 1 below.
2. Please note that you may not advertise or refer to yourself as a name not recognised by the HPCSA. Therefore you may not advertise you are an Aesthetic Practitioner or an Aesthetic Physician or an Aesthetic Specialist. You may say that you perform aesthetic medical procedures or that you have a special interest in aesthetic medicine.
We also urge that the practitioners at your clinic all become members of AAMSSA.
As an accredited doctor and member of our society your details will be published on the AAMSSA website. This list guides patients to ensure that they have procedures performed by highly capable, qualified and experienced professionals www.aestheticdoctors.co.za
Our mission is to further develop, advance and improve standards of care for patients undergoing these procedures. This mission is accomplished by ongoing trainings, education, congresses, courses and medical literature regarding this field of medicine to doctors in South Africa.
