Wellness is a lot about the way you feel. If you look good, you feel good, so I’ve learned to take my hosts’ advice and book a spa treatment soon after arrival in Mauritius. I am a regular visitor, relying heavily on the island vibe to recharge and revitalise.
This is an overview of some transformative facial treatments I’ve experienced at some of my favourite destinations.
1. One&Only Le Saint Geran
I’ll never forget the first time I emerged from an ESPA facial at this special property at the northern tip of the Belle Mare coastline. The therapists waiting to receive guests in the reception area literally stopped and stared.
I looked that different! I’ve been a huge fan of ESPA skincare products ever since. The fact that they contain all natural ingredients and are not tested on animals is even better. One&Only Le Saint Geran therapist Vinesh Mudon has healing hands, and whenever he begins the lifting and firming massage treatment he recommends for my skin I know I’m going to reap the benefits.
2. SALT of Palmar
TIME magazine lists SALT of Palmar among the World’s Greatest Places for 2019, one of many awards this eco-sensitive boutique hotel has garnered since opening just over a year ago. Salt is the key ingredient to the product range – they call it a soothing, energising, hydrating, detoxifying mineral miracle.
What surprised me was how moisturising they were and how long-lasting their effect. A differentiating factor of this spa is the halotherapy salt room, where you can relax after your facial for precious minutes of colour therapy. Surrounded by salt, under your feet and on the walls, a kaleidoscope of coloured light washes over you as you drift into a world of peace and tranquillity.
3. LUX* Belle Mare Resort & Villas
The latest treatment I’ve enjoyed at LUX* ME Spa at LUX* Belle Mare on the east coast is the Madonna facial from Australian skincare brand Intraceuticals. Unrelenting stress of daily life takes its toll, and I get the sense that hosts and therapists alike can’t wait to help me get back on form.
The effect of the Intraceuticals facial is a younger looking me, achieved by a light glow that seems to plump out my skin and banish wrinkles. How does it work? “Therapeutic-grade oxygen infuses hyaluronic acid, vitamins and serums into the skin for a red-carpet glow.” There are four oxygen treatments to plump, smooth and even out texture. Entirely non-invasive, it’s the answer to a quick fix after a long-haul flight.
4. LUX* Grand Gaube Resort & Villas
Imagine my delight at discovering the Carita facial at LUX* Grand Gaube in the north of Mauritius. The Carita Haute Beauté is one of the most popular brands from Paris – think “sublime exfoliation with sensorial massage techniques for intense relaxation and incredibly youthful radiant skin”.
That’s what you’ll get, courtesy of the Carita sisters’ Cinetic facials that revolve around the iconic Rénovateur – a blend of sunflower seeds and essential oils that refine the skin’s texture, boost its regeneration and provide incomparable radiance. They’re tailored solutions for correcting, lifting and firming skin with dramatic results visible after just one treatment.
5. Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa
In the shadow of the majestic Le Morne mountain in the west lies the Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Designed like a genuine sanctuary in the Ayurvedic style, I was treated to the two-hour Eternal Alchemy facial treatment.
It’s an anti-ageing experience that incorporates the Kobido technique, a Japanese facial massage that manually lifts the skin – and award-winning Wishpro technology that uses a magnetic pulse to help the active infusion chosen for the particular skin condition. The treatment is also non-invasive and utilises purely natural products.
6. Anahita Golf & Spa Resort
At Anahita Golf & Spa Resort, every guest needs their moment. I got mine when Ali Mawnah was assigned to me for my facial, and later, a full-body massage that was an extra-special treat. A very experienced therapist, Ali also has healing hands and knew instinctively how to take care of me. I could let go and truly relax. That day he decided I needed a hydrating and anti-wrinkling treatment, with the help of tea-based products by the French brand THEMAE.
They chose tea for its properties that gently stimulate delicate and refined beauty, as well as long-lasting wellbeing. The name THEMAE means “Japanese tea ceremony”, also referred to as “Way of tea”. THEMAE products incorporate blue, black, green and white tea. The blue replaced red tea, explains Ali, so the texture is softer and achieves a good result.
