SimSkin came to life from the hands of dermatologist who realized there was a lack of adequate surgical training models during his residency training. Prior to the invention of SimSkin, most dermatology training programs utilized low fidelity training models such as pigs’ feet, biosynthetic dressing and foam pads to practice surgical techniques. Such low fidelity models do not accurately represent human skin in terms of elasticity, turgor or tensile strength.
Determined to find a solution, the dermatologist spent years researching and testing various elastomers and fibers before finally determining the perfect formula for realistic skin for surgical training. All SimSkin models consist of an epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer and behave as real skin when injected, cut and sutured.
SimSkin has created two models specifically for Cosmetic Filler Injection Training, Zsa Zsa and the Diaphanous Model. Both of these models have specially made skin which lifts appropriately when injected with filler. The Zsa Zsa model has pigmented skin and the Diaphanous Models has clear skin allowing the injector to visibly check the placement of the filler. SimSkin also has a Simulated Filler product which mimics the properties of Hyaluronic Fillers.
SimSkin’s latest innovation is a Sclerotherapy Training Pad. This pad consists of heat sensitive vessels of various diameters. When properly injected with hot water, the vessels disappear and reappear in approximately 30 seconds. This model is ideal for determining proper needle depth when performing sclerotherapy injections.
These realistic training models, which are used in courses held by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, have revolutionized the way cosmetic procedures are being taught.
