The traditional chemical peel has been a very popular treatment for some decades now, yet its limitations and potential complications have always been concerns. Enter chemical resurfacing.
Traditional chemical peeling using free acids has been all the rage over the last four decades, focusing on deep skin exfoliation and removing skin layers, with the goal of producing new, healthier-looking skin.
This often results in a refreshed, “new” skin but could unfortunately also result in complications like prolonged sensitivity and flushing, not to mention the most dreaded condition of all – PIH, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Traditional chemical peeling systems are often aggressive treatments that can cause the skin to react and try to defend itself from this perceived attack by producing an abundance of melanin.
Darker skin types (phototypes 4, 5 and 6 ) have largely been excluded from having these chemical peel treatments, as they naturally produce more brown pigment/melanin.
And a further downside of these treatments is that they require a lengthy downtime for healing, meaning that patients are not really able to carry on with their normal lifestyle for a couple of weeks.
Chemical resurfacing
pHformula has developed a new skin resurfacing system that is based on the technology of regenerative medicine, underpinned by the concept of creating controlled chemical skin resurfacing. This controlled resurfacing actively provokes an accelerated form of cell regeneration in the different layers of the skin, while ensuring that trauma and superficial irritation are reduced.
Most of the pHformula skin resurfacing products are not timed, neutralised or removed from the skin. Instead they are self-neutralising and left on the skin, making for products of ultimate convenience.
In hyperpigmented skin, targeting the related organelle, or skin functioning process, to balance melanin production is the key objective in obtaining good results.
On an acneic skin, the target will be to ensure that the activity of the oil gland balances oil production, controls bacteria and prevents acne lesions – by controlling the inflammation of the lesion. And for results on ageing skin, actives that can stimulate the cells that produce collagen will be targeted, as the production of collagen is vital.
Merely “peeling” skin layers will not produce the desired results. With pHformula’s resurfacing treatments, however, a superficial peeling effect will be a secondary result of the treatment. The true objective is to accelerate cell regeneration in the different layers of the skin, truly bringing about a healthier, more youthful looking skin.
