I have broached the Collagen subject before but it is worth mentioning again as we transition into winter: you might be changing up your skin regime or embarking on a lifestyle change including diet and exercise. There are many studies that can be researched and I would suggest you do some reading if you are keen to take Collagen as a supplement.
In short, collagen is a protein that provides structural support in the connective tissues and muscles of the body. We make our own collagen provided we are eating a healthy, balanced diet and it enables our skin to have elasticity – much like the gluten in pasta makes the linguini taste so luscious. Sadly, it departs around age 40, sometimes sooner, and we start seeing sagging and flabbiness taking its place. There are some other nasty side effects…
Three years ago, I suffered from excruciating joint pain in my wrists in the past- so much so that I had to adapt my yoga practice quite radically because I could not bear weight on my hands. It also kept me up at night. After doing much reading on the subject, I started taking powdered hydrolysed collagen (bovine) every morning. I didn’t take any medication but continued with B, C, D3 vitamin & mineral supplements (calcium, magnesium). My wrist pain gradually disappeared and today, I am back to an energetic yoga practice.
Taking my collagen supplement as regularly as clockwork, (every morning, on a fast) I noticed that my hair (I’m now 61) was benefitting – I did experience some thinning during menopause, but now my hair is thick, and grows really fast and shines bright like a diamond! (ok, I do have a few highlights). My skin is good too, but I also regularly treat it to microneedling treatments. Nails are elegantly healthy.
The point is, I’m really happy with the results, so I’ll continue taking it.
But here’s the thing: If adding hydrolysed bone dust (there are marine and vegan options!) to your coffee each morning doesn’t excite you much, then consider a liquid supplement.
I have been trying the Gold Collagen Multidose 40+ and I really love the fruity taste – you can mix it with water as an option but I find it pleasant to take neat, like a shot, and 1 tablespoon is all you need.
Here’s what it’s supposed to do:
Firstly, and probably most importantly, it’s clinically tested (research laboratories of MINERVA) and it’s described as: “a unique combination of collagen and active ingredients for high absorption and bioavailability to help support healthy skin, hair and nails. Promote younger-looking skin. Support skin hydration and elasticity. Help support healthy-looking hair and nails. Reduce the appearance of wrinkles. General feeling of well-being”.
It’s a great supplement for women and men who don’t like taking supplements because it’s all-in-one: it contains antioxidant properties as well as bone, and immunity support.
A spoonful contains 15 active ingredients including Gold Collagen’s European patented NUTRIGLOW® Complex with Vitamin D, Grape Leaf Extract, Lycopene and Co-Enzyme Q10, vitamins and minerals. No sugar, colourants, alcohol, lactose, GMO. Gluten free and Halal certified.
Who doesn’t want to feel good and look good? Try it – I would recommend the 300ml bottle (R750).
