Do you struggle with redness, itchiness, stinging, or general skin discomfort?
You’re not alone. It’s estimated that over half of the world’s population battles with skin sensitivity, and given that the prevalence of skin irritation increases during the summer months, dealing with a sensitive, reactive skin is a hot topic at the moment.
Sun exposure is one of the biggest stressors for sensitive skin. Harmful UV rays trigger inflammation, redness, and oxidative stress in the skin, and also wreak havoc on the skin’s natural barrier function, leaving it susceptible to further environmental aggressors, such as the wind, dust, and pollutants.
A weakened barrier function also results in skin that is unable to retain moisture effectively, so it may feel tight, dry, or itchy, with possible flakiness. It may also play a role in a number of skin conditions, including contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and premature skin ageing.
It’s likely that skin sensitivity will become a concern for most people at some point in their lives – particularly for those of us who live in cities and are exposed to the harsh South African sun on a daily basis. But there are several things you can do to help prevent skin sensitivity. Dr Des Fernandes, Founder and Scientific Director of Environ, shares his tips to help calm your complexion below:
1. Avoid hot baths and showers
Exposing your skin to temperatures that are too hot (or too cold) stimulates the release of histamine, which triggers skin irritation and inflammation. Cleansing skin using hot water strips the skin’s waxy lipid bilayer, leaving it feeling tight and dry.
2. Go back to basics
Eliminate any skincare products that contain irritating ingredients, such as heavy fragrances, alcohol, and detergents. It’s also best to avoid the use harsh, granular scrubs, microbeads, and scrubbing brushes.
3. Moisturise your skin
Incorporating a hydrating serum into your skincare regime will help to soothe sensitive skin while adding extra moisture. Try Environ’ newly launched Focus Care™ Moisture+ Range which contain various combinations of scientifically researched ingredients that may deliver moisture boosting benefits to dehydrated skin.
4. Try colostrum to soothe your skin
When used in skincare products, bovine colostrum is known to stimulate collagen production, help combat free radicals, and reduce inflammation and skin irritation. Environ’s Colostrum Gel is an immune-boosting serum that contains a combination of vitamins, minerals, and growth factors, to leave your skin looking visibly restored.
5. Wear sunscreen
A broad-spectrum sunscreen worn daily is an essential. Opt for one that’s rich in antioxidants, your best defence is Environ’s RAD SPF 15 to help protect your skin against damaging UV rays and other environmental aggressors that may lead to skin sensitivity.
